As we noted in Chapter 12, the reserves of non-renewable resources are inexorably diminished as they are extracted from the environment and used in the human economy. This is because non-renewable resources are finite in quantity and their stocks do not regenerate after they are mined.

Renewable and nonrenewable resources are energy sources that human society uses to function on a daily basis. The difference between these two types of resources is that renewable resources can naturally replenish themselves while nonrenewable resources cannot. This means that nonrenewable resources are limited in supply and cannot be used sustainably. There are four major types of nonrenewable resources: oil, natural gas, coal , and nuclear energy.

Renewable and Nonrenewable Energy

A non-renewable resource also called a finite resource is a natural resource that cannot be readily replaced by natural means at a quick enough pace to keep up with consumption. The original organic matter, with the aid of heat and pressure, becomes a fuel such as oil or gas. Earth minerals and metal ores , fossil fuels coal , petroleum , natural gas and groundwater in certain aquifers are all considered non-renewable resources, though individual elements are always conserved except in nuclear reactions. Conversely, resources such as timber when harvested sustainably and wind used to power energy conversion systems are considered renewable resources , largely because their localized replenishment can occur within time frames meaningful to humans as well. Earth minerals and metal ores are examples of non-renewable resources. The metals themselves are present in vast amounts in Earth's crust , and their extraction by humans only occurs where they are concentrated by natural geological processes such as heat, pressure, organic activity, weathering and other processes enough to become economically viable to extract.

Nonrenewable Resources

Natural resources are materials or things that people use from the earth. There are two types of natural resources. The first are renewable natural resources. They are called renewable because they can grow again or never run out.

The is defines as the sources of energy which are produced continuously in nature and are essentially inexhaustible at least in the time frame of human societies. These energy sources replenished themselves naturally in a relatively short time and therefore will always be available. The Nonrenewable Energy resources are defined as the energy resources which have been accumulated over the ages and not quickly replenishable when they are exhausted. From the perspective of ongoing sustainable use of energy resources, we have classified energy sources into two categories: renewable energy and nonrenewable energy. Renewable energy [renewable]: Replaced or replenished naturally in the same amount or less time as it takes to draw the supply down. Most renewable energy sources are also clean in that they do not require combustion, which releases pollutants and greenhouse gases A gas in the atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range. This property allows the earth to maintain its warm temperature which supports life on earth. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone, and methane are good examples of gases with this property. When the concentration of these gases gets too high, the earth warms beyond its normal range and many catastrophic climate shifts occur.

oil, coal, and ore that are removed from the ground. Separated into two broad categories: ▫ Renewable resources. ▫ Nonrenewable resources.

A New-Growth Perspective on Non-Renewable Resources
