The Respectful Prostitute by Sartre Jean Paul

Three damned souls, Garcin, Inez, and Estelle are brought to the same room in hell by a mysterious Valet. They had all expected medieval torture devices to punish them for eternity, but instead find a plain room furnished in Second Empire style. None of them will admit the reason for their damnation: Garcin says that he was executed for being a pacifist, while Estelle insists that a mistake has been made. Inez however, demands that they all stop lying to themselves and confess to their crimes. She refuses to believe that they all ended up in the room by accident and soon realizes that they have been placed together to make each other miserable. Garcin suggests that they try to leave each other alone, but Inez starts to sing about an execution and Estelle wants to find a mirror. Inez tries to seduce Estelle by offering to be her "mirror" and tell her everything she sees, but ends up frightening her instead.

“Hell Is Other People”: Sartre on Personal Relationships

No Exit is popularly understood as arguing that human relationships are essentially fraught with conflict. This essay explains why this pessimistic interpretation of Sartre is mistaken. No Exit opens with its three main characters—Garcin, Inez, and Estelle—being led into an old-fashioned living room. Where are the horned devils with pitchforks?

It is a sort of living death to be surrounded by the ceaseless concern for judgments and action that one does not even desire to change. In fact, since we are alive, I wanted to demonstrate, through the absurd, the importance for us of liberty, i. Whatever the circle of hell in which we live, I think we are free to break out of it. And if people do not break out, they stay there of their own free will. In this way they choose to live in hell. Of his nine plays No Exit is centrally important both as a crucial text applying the philosophical precepts that dominated the post—World War II era and as a formulation of a new kind of drama that significantly influenced the theater in the second half of the 20th century.

The original title is the French equivalent of the legal term in camera , referring to a private discussion behind closed doors. It is a depiction of the afterlife in which three deceased characters are punished by being locked into a room together for eternity. It is the source of Sartre's especially famous phrase "L'enfer, c'est les autres" or "Hell is other people", a reference to Sartre's ideas about the look and the perpetual ontological struggle of being caused to see oneself as an object from the view of another consciousness.
