For example, the directions principles would apply differently for a design of a costume than for a design of a current fashion garment. The ingredients elements are raw materials that must be combined. These elements change the taste of the garment, just as the ingredients can change the taste of a cake. A dress is more eye-catching in a bright color than a dull, neutral color, even though the design is the same.

Basic elements of design in fashion include lines, shapes, form, colour, and texture, whereas the primary principles of design include balance, emphasis, proportions, harmony, variety, and rhythm. Lines include straight lines, diagonal lines and curve lines etc.

The elements of art and principles of design are the fundamental pieces that make up an artwork. Most works of art will make use of many or all of the elements and principles of art. We often judge art by how effectively the artist used these design fundamentals even before we learn about them. The elements of art are the building blocks of an artwork: color, line, shape, form, value, texture, and space. They are the tools artists use when creating an artwork. They are the ways an artist can organize the elements of art to create a wide range of effects.

A-Line the hem is larger than other measurements, therefore giving the outfit an A shape Shift the chest, waist, and hem all have the same measurements, giving the outfit a cylindrical shape. This is very good for form fitting garments. Tent- the garment is flared beginning under the arm hole, giving it a tent appearance Empire Line a panel divides the garment into two parts, just above the waist Asymmetrical this type of garment has no defined silhouette. It is achieved by varying hemlines, panels, and colors.


By understanding and using the elements and principles of design you increase the likelihood that you will be successful in creating designs that are pleasing.
