The threat of ecological collapse is increasingly becoming a reality for the world's populations, both human and nonhuman; addressing this global challenge requires enormous cultural creativity and demands a diversity of perspectives, especially from the humanities. Theology and Ecology Across the Disciplines draws from a variety of academic disciplines and positions in order to explore the role and nature of environmental responsibility, especially where such themes intersect with religious or theological viewpoints. Covering disciplines such as history, philosophy, literature, politics, peace studies, economics, women's studies, and the ecological sciences as well as systematic and moral theology, the contributors emphasize how these positions have begun to develop distinct perspectives on urgent ecological issues, as well as pointing toward specific practices at the local and international level.

It is based on a systematic review of original data-based quantitative research published in peer-reviewed journals between and , including a few seminal articles published since First, I provide a brief historical background to set the stage. Finally, I discuss what health professionals should do in light of these research findings and make recommendations in this regard. Religion, medicine, and healthcare have been related in one way or another in all population groups since the beginning of recorded history [ 1 ]. Only in recent times have these systems of healing been separated, and this separation has occurred largely in highly developed nations; in many developing countries, there is little or no such separation.

Theology and Ecology Across the Disciplines

Hill, Brennan R. The following response to our four friendly but challenging reviewers follows the same process and format used in our book. The three of us sat down to determine, first, the issues to be dealt with and then, who would do what. After Denise Lardner Carmody's concise and complete summary of our book's contents and intents, the concerns seemed to fall into three broad categories: 1 The insider-outsider problematic Barnes ; 2 the place of theology in a religiously affiliated university and the roles of spirituality and worship in such a theology Cunningham ; and 3 concerns about our overall method, together with the limitations on such a method resulting from the white, Catholic, middle-class, maleness of all three authors Carmody and Hinsdale. Paul Knitter responds to the first issue; William Madges to the second, and Brennan Hill to the third. Columbia University Libraries.

What is Philosophy of Religion? Philosophy is the most critical and comprehensive thought process developed by human beings. It is quite different from religion in that where Philosophy is both critical and comprehensive, Religion is comprehensive but not necessarily critical. Religion attempts to offer a view of all of life and the universe and to offer answers to most , if not all, of the most basic and important questions which occur to humans all over the planet. The answers offered by Religion are not often subject to the careful scrutiny of reason and logic.

Theology is the systematic study of the nature of the divine and, more broadly, of religious belief. It is taught as an academic discipline , typically in universities and seminaries. Revelation pertains to the acceptance of God , gods , or deities , as not only transcendent or above the natural world, but also willing and able to interact with the natural world and, in particular, to reveal themselves to humankind. While theology has turned into a secular field , religious adherents still consider theology to be a discipline that helps them live and understand concepts such as life and love and that helps them lead lives of obedience to the deities they follow or worship. Theologians use various forms of analysis and argument experiential , philosophical , ethnographic , historical , and others to help understand , explain , test, critique , defend or promote any myriad of religious topics. As in philosophy of ethics and case law , arguments often assume the existence of previously resolved questions, and develop by making analogies from them to draw new inferences in new situations. The study of theology may help a theologian more deeply understand their own religious tradition , [2] another religious tradition, [3] or it may enable them to explore the nature of divinity without reference to any specific tradition.

The relationship between religion and science is the subject of continued debate in philosophy and theology. To what extent are religion and science compatible? Are religious beliefs sometimes conducive to science, or do they inevitably pose obstacles to scientific inquiry? It studies historical and contemporary interactions between these fields, and provides philosophical analyses of how they interrelate.
