Stress, appraisal, and coping

Cate Miller, Robert M. Gordon, Richard J. The first aim was to test for differences between groups in responses to stressful parenting events. As hypothesized, mothers of disabled children reported higher levels of depressive symptomatology. Differences in psychological distress and health status approached significance. The second aim was to explore the mediating influences of coping strategies and cognitive appraisals. As predicted, emotion-focused coping was related to increased psychological distress in mothers of disabled children whereas problemfocused coping was associated with decreased distress.

Stress has been defined traditionally either as a stimulus , often referred to as a stressor , that happens to the person such as a laboratory shock or loss of a job, or as a response characterized by physiological arousal and negative affect, especially anxiety. In his book, Psychological Stress and the Coping Process Lazarus, , Richard Lazarus defined stress as a relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised as personally significant and as taxing or exceeding resources for coping. Stress and coping theory provides a framework that is useful for formulating and testing hypotheses about the stress process and its relation to physical and mental health. The framework emphasizes the importance of two processes, appraisal and coping, as mediators of the ongoing relationship between the person and the environment. Stress, Health, and Coping: Synthesis, Commentary, and Future Directions

Police in Europe are facing increased demands and diminished resources, and this is particularly prominent among emergency response officers EROs working in poorer countries such as Portugal. EROs completed daily diaries over 11 working days. Each diary entry included an open-ended stressor, coping section and a Likert-type scale to evaluate coping effectiveness. Data were analyzed using inductive and deductive content analysis procedures. The frequency of stressors, coping and coping effectiveness were calculated. EROs reported facing more operational stressors, particularly public disorder situations. However, gun situations were perceived as the most intense stressor.

This chapter summarizes the major developments in stress and coping research that are presented in this volume. Advances in understanding antecedents of the appraisal process are noted, as are problems with the original formulation of emotion-focused coping. Future-oriented coping, interpersonal coping, and religious and spiritual coping are introduced into the stress and coping model. The scope of coping has been broadened to include the regulation of positive as well as negative emotion states. Meaning-focused kinds of coping that help motivate and sustain positive well-being in the face of stress are introduced.

Stress, appraisal, and coping

The aim of this article is to briefly review the literature on stigmatization and more generally identity threats, to focus more specifically of the way people appraise and cope with those threatening situations. Based on the transactional model of stress and coping of Lazarus and Folkman , we propose a model of coping with identity threats that takes into accounts the principle characteristic of stigma, its devaluing aspect. Originally, a stigma was a physical mark that was apposed on some persons to signal not only their lower status e. Now, one can be stigmatized because he merely belongs to a group that is devalued in a given society. This can be because one is a woman, poor or from a poor family, homosexual, from another culture, member of a minority or simply because one does not look like everybody else e.

- Grazie!
