The creators have provided separate training and testing images with ground truths annotated by experts. This paper proposes a new supervised method for blood vessel segmentation using Zernike moment-based shape descriptors. The method implements a pixel wise classification by computing a D feature vector comprising of both statistical gray-level features and shape-based Zernike moment features. Also the feature set contains optimal coefficients of the Zernike Moments which were derived based on the maximum differentiability between the blood vessel and background pixels. A manually selected training points obtained from the training set of the DRIVE dataset, covering all possible manifestations were used for training the ANN-based binary classifier. Further, the segmented outputs were able to cover thinner blood vessels better than previous methods, aiding in early detection of pathologies.

We present a survey of vessel extraction techniques and algorithms. We put the various vessel extraction approaches and techniques in perspective by means of a classification of the existing research. While we have mainly targeted the extraction of blood vessels, neurosvascular structure in particular, we have also reviewed some of the segmentation methods for the tubular objects that show similar characteristics to vessels. We have divided vessel segmentation algorithms and techniques into six main categories: 1 pattern recognition techniques, 2 model-based approaches, 3 tracking-based approaches, 4 artificial intelligence-based approaches, 5 neural network-based approaches, and 6 miscellaneous tube-like object detection approaches. Some of these categories are further divided into subcategories. We have also created tables to compare the papers in each category against such criteria as dimensionality, input type, pre-processing, user interaction, and result type.

Frequency representation and orientation representation of the Gabor filter are identical to the human vision system. In the spatial domain, a 2-D Gabor filter is a Gaussian kernel function modulated by a sinusoidal plane wave [9]. Enhancement of the pixels of the blood vessels oriented along the various dimensions can be done due to the factor of directional selectivity of the Gabor filter. The response of the Gabor filter is a complex number with real and imaginary parts that are orthogonal and act as low level oriented edge discriminators [10] [11]. The AVR value is used for calculation of blood vessels extraction and detection of the bifurcation point of the vessels like diabetic retinopathy and prematurity.

Finally, a 3D thinning algorithm is applied to extract the vessel centerlines. The resulting centerline structure is used to analyze and classify the blood vessels.
