Mathematics Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people studying math at any level and professionals in related fields. It only takes a minute to sign up. I would like to compare Courant's book with Apostol's and Spivak's in terms of difficulty of the problems provided. After reading that book, should I go for one of the two above or should I study something else like Rudin? My focus is on being rigorous and also adept at problem solving. I think Courant and John's book is the richest of the three textbooks you mention: it essentially contains the other two.
The mathematics are rigorous but the many examples that are given and the applications that are treated make the books extremely readable and the arguments easy to understand. These books are ideally suited for an undergraduate calculus course. Each chapter is followed by a number of interesting exercises. More difficult parts are marked with an asterisk. There are many illuminating figures

These books are those designed to be the required textbook for a standard high school or university calculus course. Many of them have had a large number of revisions, which makes it likely that you can find slightly older but still perfectly useful copies on the used market. They try to have everything -- proofs, intuitive explanations, illustrations, problems -- but they aren't necessarily great at anything. These books are widely derided by math majors, though I suspect this to be in part motivated by elitism and by grad students' dislike of teaching lower-level math courses.
Fritz John 14 June — 10 February was a German -born mathematician specialising in partial differential equations and ill-posed problems. His early work was on the Radon transform and he is remembered for John's equation. He was a MacArthur Fellow. Following Hitler 's rise to power in "non- aryans " were being expelled from teaching posts, and John, being half Jewish, emigrated from Germany to England. John published his first paper in on Morse theory.
He is best known by the general public for the book What is Mathematics? Courant was born in Lublinitz , in the Prussian Province of Silesia. Edith Stein was Richard's cousin on the paternal side. During his youth his parents moved often, including to Glatz , then to Breslau and in to Berlin.
